Big Question

Blog Friends:

What ONE book would you give a friend who was moving away to a new city and an exciting adventure? It could be fiction or non, practical or mystical, heartfelt or tough love. Imagine yourself browsing through the bookstore, gift card from me in hand, selecting the PERFECT send off for my friend...

What do you buy?

I don't know, but I recently read Julia Child's "My Life in France". I didn't know that much about Julia before the movie came out, but the movie really had me inspired, that life could continue to be an adventure if you're willing to explore and try new things, so I had to get the book. Julia's truly an inspiration about keeping people a priority and never stopping the learning process. Two thumbs up!

When I moved from New York City to Maine five years ago, the book that got me through it (because it was so funny and sad and honest and real and about something I'd always heard of but never knew much about) was A Walk In The Woods by Bill Bryson. It almost made me want to hike the Appalachian trail, not that I ever would! I think was what so special about it for me was the adventure aspect--when you're doing something so new to you and you don't know what's what, it's fun to read about someone doing the same.

Trish, I just finished Donald Miller's *A Million Miles in a Thousand Years* last night, and with its call to live good stories, it could be a great gift in this circumstance!

I love Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott. To me it portrays how wherever you are in life, it's right where you need to be.

I agree with Amy. Miller's newest book is perfect for starting a new phase of your life.

Maybe this is too practical, but I like to give a travel guide of the new city/place. I figure maybe it will make them excited about the things they can do and see there.
