Balderdash

We were hanging out with friends this weekend. After dinner, they pulled out the board game Balderdash, where you try to make up crazy (but convincing) definitions to all sorts of words most of us have never heard of. It was SO fun.

It reminded me of how much I love these sorts of games, the ones that let you use your grown-up brain in a little-kid sort of way. Pictionary, Cranium--anything that forces you to be creative. Plus, they make you laugh really, really hard, which I count as aerobic exercise.

So...I am timidly contemplating giving up TV for a few months. Not forever, but just for a little while to see what happens in life when I don't have that to lean on. I will probably make an exception for the next season of So You Think You Can Dance, and Red Sox games on Sunday afternoons. But there will be rainy Saturdays, and random Thursday nights with nothing much to do--the perfect chance to increase my board game skill. But which games?

Recommendations?

Balderdash is so fun! But I haven't played it in ages.

I don't have any game recommendations because I think the only game we own is Cranium.

I really love Boggle- turns your brain around in great directions and good for a small amount of people. Apples to Apples is also a lot of fun, especially in larger group numbers.

We like Taboo. You need at least 4 people to play, though.

Oh my...we love games!! As Gretchen commented, Apples to Apples is very fun...especially in larger groups. We are big Scrabble fans. Charades (no board necessary) is a classic favorite party game. Scattegories, Taboo, Hoopla...love 'em all!

Balderdash is basically the pinnacle of board games, in my opinion, but unfortunately you need more than a few people so I hardly ever get to play it.

One really fantastic game for adults is Settlers of Catan. I know it sounds a bit silly but it's REALLY fun and involves a bit more strategy than the ordinary board game (although not too much). Carcassonne is another good one. Both of these have beautiful layout too. And you can play with just two people, or more.

Apple To Apples is definitely my favorite. My friends and I always break it out when there is a big group of us. Also if you like word games Quiddler is another great one. I'm a boardgame junkie. :)

Oh man I wish we lived near each other. I am a HUGE board gamer. My gaming pals are up in Boston (you know Alicia and her hubby). Art always found us the most amazing games that I had never heard of and I loved them. I'm a huge fan of Mahjong. I have so many board games, I don't have room for them all. I'll have to send you a picture of my board game overflow.
